House bill passed re: sales of animal cruelty videos (sp. crush videos)

This came from Vern Buchanan, US Congressman. I think the Supreme Court ruled videos were protected by the 1st Amendment - maybe this is in response to that decision?

    Congressman Vern Buchanan,
Representing the 13th District of Florida

Minutes ago, the U.S. House passed important legislation banning the sale of animal cruelty videos. As grisly and shocking as it sounds, videos of animal torture are being filmed and marketed on the internet. These movies are sometimes referred to as “crush videos” because they capture the killings of animals that are sadistically crushed to death.

When I learned of this horrific practice, I immediately co-sponsored H.R. 5566, the Prevention of Interstate Commerce in Animal Crush Videos Act,  which just passed the House by a vote of 413 to 3. The measure is targeted at an underground market of deviants who enjoy watching the intentional torture of innocent puppies, kittens, birds and even reptiles.

I will continue to monitor the progress of H.R. 5566 with the goal of sending the bill to the President for his signature as quickly as possible.

You can be certain that I will continue to fight against the inhumane torture of animals.

    Vern
