Vick's 'selfish act' caused by confrontation complications

    By Doug Farrar

There are days when being Michael Vick(notes) just isn't all it's cracked up to be.

We've detailed the initial story of the shooting at a party Vick held to celebrate his 30th birthday on June 26. However, and as it always seems to do with Vick, things have turned in an ugly fashion. When we last left this story, there was a dispute as to when Vick left the party before his cousin, Quanis Philips, was shot. The problem with any association with Phillips is that Phillips has been convicted of a felony, and Vick can't associate with known felons as a condition of his probation.

Add to that the additional news that Vick was reportedly involved in a confrontation before Phillips was shot, and things start to get a little dicey. Yahoo! Sports' Charles Robinson believes that the timeline and series of events that Vick put forth is falling apart faster than one of those ill-advised speed option plays Vick ran for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2009.

"This idea that Quanis Phillips 'crashed' Michael Vick's party doesn't appear to be holding a lot of water. No great effort [to] keep him away," Robinson said on his Twitter feed.

Then, the news that Vick has been barred from traveling outside the state of Pennsylvania until further notice. Judy Smith, Vick's crisis manager (which sounds like a job with limited off-time), told a Philadelphia news station that the revocation of travel privileges forced Vick to miss two scheduled events: A football camp for kids in Baltimore, and a golf tournament in Atlanta. Bad news on the golf tournament, as it had Vick's name on it.

Cornelius Corprew, director of the Camp Elite Sports football camp, told the media that he thought Vick had committed a "selfish act" by calling to cancel so soon before the camp was supposed to go off. "They called early, like 2 o'clock in the morning, telling us he's not coming," Corprew said. "And then we couldn't speak to him. It was through one of his associates ... No state agency is communicating at 2 o'clock in the morning that he's not allowed to come."

Vick had been paid half of a $4,000 fee to attend the camp; it is not known whether he had been pre-paid for his attendance at the golf tournament. "You talk about second chances," Corprew continued. "You're given a great second chance and this would've been the perfect place to show he appreciated being given a second chance."

That second chance may be coming to an end. The Eagles, who had said that they had no intention of cutting Vick as they monitored the situation, may be changing their tune. As the incidents add up, and the stories spring more leaks, reports indicate that the team is starting to prepare for life without the troubled quarterback.

The NFL has been relatively quiet on this series of events, but any further discipline for Vick would most likely be extremely harsh; perhaps career-ending. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell no doubt feels that he put his own name on the line by letting Vick back into the league after Vick served his time in prison in the wake of the Bad Newz Kennels dogfighting scandal.

For Vick, a third chance would not be forthcoming.

what a potty mouth.  he paid his debt to society.  those are the rules that govern us. no one condones what he did with the dogs. new facts will speak for themselves.  it is not for you to judge in advance, or ever.

moderator please consider sentencing Gene/Jean to a month suspended from the forum, then a month's probation.  he/she is foul mouthed and offensive.  this is not the kind of person we need representing the breed, in fact, he/she reinforces negative stereotypes about pitbull owners.

p.s. take one more look down there just to be sure

Ok, I'll take my suspension and come back strong as ever. After all, I'd have paid my debt to society and you have to let it go, right? So, I'll apologize to anybody here who DOES NOT have any piercings or tatoos, ok? Anybody here who doesn't look like the stereotypical PB owner, ok? Anybody who doesn't fit in at a Razor Edge show, ok?  And btw, I don't own any pitbulls and don't represent the breed.

p.s. checked again and those are balls, not a tinker toy.

I'm surprised anyone on this site would defend Vick in any way- ever. I am not at all offended by a potty mouth who openly hates a convicted dog fighter/killer. In fact, I am more offended by those here who condone the breeding and selling of Pits.

Michael Vick Michael Vick will not be punished by the NFL for an incident at Vick's birthday party last month, which resulted in Quanis Phillips, a co-defendant in Vick's dog-fighting case, being shot in the leg.

According to the Philadelphia Daily News, league spokesman Greg Aiello confirmed that the NFL had completed its investigation into the case and Vick would sidestep a suspension. "There is no change in [Vick's] playing status," Aiello said in an email.

Vick was was eventually ruled out as a suspect in Phillips' shooting. No charges were filed, despite police saying that they knew the identity of the person that pulled the trigger, because of "lack of cooperation from the victim, coupled with the reluctance of witnesses," Virginia police spokesman Adam Bernstein said in a statement on July 6.

Vick's behavior has been under close watch by the NFL and commissioner Roger Goodell, who reinstated Vick last July after the quarterback was released from prison following an 18-month sentence.

The Eagles recently denied reports that they were considering releasing Vick. He's slated to be the backup to Kevin Kolb as Philadelphia moves forward post-Donovan McNabb

And I thought he wasn't supposed to be hangin with his punk ex-con felon friends or am I missing something? No, guess I'm not, cuz now he's on Joes & Pros on Spike tv - hope you happy-go-lucky gangsta  dogkilling fuckups and all you wannabes lose your whole wad betting on this loser. It's a comin. Everybody's trying to keep him legit and marketable and he just keeps giving it back to them up the ass - and laughing out the side of his face at the schmucks who say, Give him a second chance. What, you like it up the ass? Personally, you'd have to put me in a rape-stand. Ohhhh, my tender ears, why do I have to hear such things when we're discussing a morally upright young man who just happened to kill dogs with his bare hands, who's brutally murdered for pure sport? Ewwwww, don't talk about anal sex, we're just discussing people who swing dogs by their back legs bashing their heads on concrete multiple times until they die, people who tie them in choke knots and leave them to struggle and die. Oh, mommy, she said bad words about people who tie dogs to rocks and drown them. Please, please, my smelling salts, she said Up the ass. Oh, my, what's the world coming to when people can say such things in polite company? Oh, dear, she said Anal........
